Charlize Theron Talks 'Atomic Blonde': Trailer Coming Friday

Charlize Theron this year will prove again that she is a force, having shown off her action chops in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road as Imperator Furiosa in 2015, Theron in Atomic Blonde is going to be just as feisty. In the David Leitch-directed film, Theron plays Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton, and will take down folks in Berlin 1989 as she is sent on a mission to deliver a dossier.

Five years ago Theron and her producing partner Beth Kono bought the rights to the graphic novel, of which the film is based off of, by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart. “I hadn’t seen another character like her out there,” Theron says. “She doesn’t apologize for anything. We made her strong and feisty. She’s cheeky. These were all things I responded to.”

Theron was prepared for such a role, having a background in ballet - which served her quite well. “It’s refreshing to find an actor who can do these long, long takes, memorize the choreography, maintain the character, and deliver a performance,” Leitch says. “She’s extraordinary.”

Her regime consisted of four-to-five hours a day for three months with Leitch and his team over at the 87 Eleven Action Design studio. The actress learned how to hold her own against action scenes where she was up against multiple enemies. She even learned the quite difficult MMA technique of hanging arm throw -  where she flings herself on the ground, landing on her back, to throw another man over her head.

“Let’s be honest, I got my ass handed to me every day,” Theron says of the intense training. “I cracked through two of my teeth in the back of my mouth from clenching so much that I had to have massive dental surgery right before we left for Budapest to shoot the film.”

The film directed by David Leitch, of John Wick and soon Deadpool 2 fame, will have its debut at SXSW on Sunday March 12 before going to cinemas on July 28.

And with the SXSW premiere the film will release a trailer for people not able to make it.

Atomic Blonde is written by 300 scribe, Kurt Johnstad, and stars James McAvoy, John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones.

The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
