Joss Whedon To Direct 'Batgirl' Standalone Film

Variety are reporting that the folks over at Warner Bros. are gearing up to make a standalone film revolving around the DC Comics character Batgirl.

Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron helmer Joss Whedon is nearing a deal to write, produce, and direct the standalone as part of the DC Films' Universe. No other producers are attached to the project. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The standalone film originated in the past month.

This Batgirl feature is another female-driven film Warners are making, having the Gal Gadot-starrer Wonder Woman coming out in June and a Gotham City Sirens film headlined by Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn to come out in the near future.

The treasured DC Comics character has never been brought to live on the big screen before, and is a character steeped in Gotham's heroic side of things. Batgirl's real name is Barbara Gordon, who is the daughter of Commissioner Gordon - played by JK Simmons in this cinematic universe. She was created in 1967 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino. It is expected that we will see other Gotham citizens in this new standalone.
