Sony Pictures Sets Release Date For 'Venom'

A project that has been in the books for Sony Pictures for some time, now has its release date.

Venom will be released October 5, 2018 - which incidentally was DC Films' Aquaman date before moving to December 21. The studio also moved the date of The Girl in the Spider’s Web to Oct. 19, 2018.

Producing the film will be Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who are overseeing the project, along with Amy Pascal. Writing the film are screenwriters, Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, Pinkner previously worked on Sony's 2014 film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the two recently turned in a draft. Previous drafts were written by Dante Harper. No director has been attached to the film as of now.

Venom is being poised as a start of a franchise, that will be separate from the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, for the studio.

The Marvel Comics character and Spider-Man villain of the same name was created in 1988 by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. His human name is Eddie Brock, who by getting into contact with a symbiotic gets imbued with Spider-Man-like powers. The first live-action iteration of the character was played by Topher Grace in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.
