Tom Hardy To Headline 'Venom' Sony Standalone Film

A reckoning is coming in the form of Venom, a standalone Sony film, that will feature and revolve solely around the notorious Spider-Man villain of the same name.

He was Batman's enemy in The Dark Knight Rises as the hulking mercenary and ex-League of Shadows member, Bane and will become a villain once more in this film. I am indeed talking about Tom Hardy. Hardy, who was supposed to star in Triple Frontier, has been tapped to play the vicious and crazed symbiote-human bad guy. The actor is supposedly a massive Venom fan.

Also brought into the project is Zombieland helmer, Ruben Fleischer, whose sensibilities of bring dark humour and themes in Zombieland made him a good fit for Sony.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are penning the script for the film with producing of the project to be done by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, along with Amy Pascal. Overseeing for Columbia Pictures are Palak Patel and Eric Fineman.

It should be noted that this film will not be connected to what both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are doing with the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man i.e. will be a part of Sony's Marvel Universe and not the Marvel Cinematic Universe - where the likes of Daisy Johnson, Iron Man, Captain America and more inhabit.

In the comics, Eddie Brock is imbued with Spider-Man-like powers after being exposed to the same symbiotic alien that Spidey had for a time. Brock takes up the name of Venom and becomes a villain like no other for Spider-Man and terrorises New York as well.

Venom is expected to begin production this autumn and will be released October 5, 2018.
