'The Mummy' Director Alex Kurtzman Talks 'Dark Universe' Projects & Possible Acting Leads

This Friday will see the start of Universal's Dark Universe - a cinematic universe where the classical monsters like the Mummy, Frankenstein's Monster, etcetera co-exist - with the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy. So with that Alex Kurtzman, the film's director, has been getting questions on how the universe-building is going on over at Universal Pictures.

Speaking to FANDOM, Kurtzman revealed that audiences will be treated to a plethora of films from this new universe. “We know we’re going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man,” Kurtzman said.

He continued on about how the universe will be expanded from looking at the mythologies of all the classical monsters: “There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.”

Kurtzman, was then asked about who he'd want to bring, actor-wise, into the fold in regards to Dark Universe. “I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…” he said. Jolie has been rumoured to play the Bride of Frankenstein, so it is possible that we see her in this cinematic universe down the road.

Already they have a few actors who have been cast in their universe, like Tom Cruise as soldier of fortune Nick Morton, Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, Sofia Boutella as The Mummy, Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's monster.

Universal are now waiting to see how The Mummy fairs out, in order to really push on ahead with this universe. If the film is received well enough by everyone and makes a good amount of money, then prepare for all things monsters!
