Zhang Ziyi Added To 'Monsterverse' For 'Godzilla: King Of The Monsters'

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.' Monsterverse has added another lead to its ensemble cinematic universe.

The China-born actress Zhang Ziyi has been added to the next Godzilla film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, in a franchise leading role.

Set several years after the Gareth Edwards-directed 2014 Godzilla film, King of the Monsters, will see a new cast that includes Ziyi along with Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, and the returning Ken Watanabe taking on a new adventure in this freshman cinematic universe. Michael Dougherty is directing the film from a script written by himself and Zach Shields.

Ziyi's role is being reported by Variety to be a "significant figure within the covert Monarch organization." Monarch being the scientific organisation akin to SHIELD for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but in this case dealing with the likes of Godzilla and King Kong not super-powered beings, they were first seen in the 2014 Godzilla film and later again in the 2017 Kong: Skull Island blockbuster.

With King of the Monsters hitting cinemas worldwide March 22, 2019 we will have gotten three films from this new and upcoming cinematic universe, that will culminate even further with the gigantic monster beat-'em-up film, Godzilla vs. Kong, which is expected to release May 20, 2020.
