Jaume Collet-Serra Frontrunner For 'Suicide Squad 2' Directing Position

Previously it was reported that Mel Gibson, director of such films like Hacksaw Ridge and The Passion of the Christ, was the first option for Warner Bros. to helm the sequel to the 2016 DC film, Suicide Squad.

But now Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed Shallows, Run All Night, and Non-Stop, has been pegged to be the new frontrunner for directing the project.

It is understood that Gibson left the film due to script delays pushing the production that forced him to vacate. The studio brought on Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, Avengers, Ready Player One) to write out a treatment and a now a new script will be made.

While the original David Ayer-directed film suffered on not garnering a great critical reception, it made just over $740 million at the worldwide box office so a sequel was a given. Ayer is expected, however, to helm Gotham City Sirens - which is to be a film revolving around Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

Suicide Squad 2 reportedly is aiming for a mid-2018 start of production and has no immediate release date
